"I am Woman"

In my self portrait I am naked to show my vulnerability to the world and I am covered in blood to represent my menstrual cycle. I use a lot of purple in my project because my favorite color is purple and representing my head is a butterfly. I have a butterfly tattoo and I consider a butterfly to be my spirt animal so I found it to be a good substitute for my head.

Two artists by the name Nancy Spero and Mary Beth Edelson inspired me in my collage. These two artist are major feminist artists who express themselves through their artwork. I admired the way Spero uses simple silhouettes and the way Edelson uses objects in place of heads. Along with my drawing are a few powerful words which say, "Yes I am a woman. Yes I get my period. No it does not make me inferior. It makes me stronger." These words come to my mind when I think of myself and what I believe in. I am strongly for women's rights and am pro-feminism. I am tired of women being treated differently than a man just because they get their period and men do not. In my opinion, men and woman are equal.
