I was very hesitant about using this as my midterm project, but this is the one idea I worked on that seems to show how I truly would like to express myself. I know the project was to make a self portrait, but I figured it might be interesting to show myself in a portrait in a way people might view me through their eyes.
I decided to use softballs as a big part of this because it was and still is a big part of my life. It helped out a lot that softballs have a bold neon color because it is one thing in this picture I wanted people to pay a lot of attention to. Since about the age of 6 all I can remember is batting practice and lessons, and that is one part of me I am extremely proud of. I also added eye black to my face that I got from the cover of a sports magazine to show that although i have on a face full of makeup, sports is a big part of my life as well. I didn't want to completely cover the back in softballs to show that I do in fact spend most of my time and money in makeup stores. The original photo I had on a black shirt, and i used the logos of makeup stores to cover it to show that is a part of me. I then added a beauty pageant sash across me. Some of my family members wanted to push me to be in pageants when i was younger, but I was never into it because of insecurities such as my smile, which is why I covered my actual mouth from the photo with a mouth that has straight pearly white teeth.
This image may catch the attention of a lot of viewers because at first glance it might look like a normal photo, but once you actually look at it you see the changes that were made. Frida Kahlo inspired me to make my collage this way because in a lot of her portraits, her background catches my attention more than anything else and that's what is wanted for mine. Once I see something out of the ordinary in her paintings it made me want to look into depth of everything else she had in the picture.
I was happy that I got to use modern technology to create this project although this wasn't my original plan I used snap chat as an edit, but fro most of it I used a Photoshop app to add more detail and enhance the colors in the picture.
