The Alienation

What is the subject of your image?
- The subject of my image us the alienation and absorption that this era has come due to social media. Throughout this course and mostly towards the end we continued to speak about how we can become affected by the expectations of society and loss of our own identities.
What is the content?
- The content of my image is myself surrounded by faces with an odd looking connector to an open mouth sitting on top of the faces. While on the top of the image a moon is there with a shadow on the right edge surrounded by the ripple effect caused by the water.
-Choices:
Moon- The idea of having a moon in the image is to connect my meaning for it in it. The moon to me shows that not even darkness can hide beauty. This includes the environment but regarding people as well and the evilness in personalities.
Water- The water and ripple effect symbolizes people opinions spreading across our world and minds.
Faces- This is to show the society. They are all the same color and type of filter with eye shot because identities are now viewed as the same. And the alteration everyone does to themselves in order to fit in and look/act like others.
Me- I included myself because I do admit to changing my appearance and following what is trendy. Social media has affected me in many ways mentally just because of people's opinions.
Umbilical Cord- Demonstrates birth. The birth of what has become poison. And this connects to me and the mouth piece.
Mouth- This piece is one of the most eye catching and thought provoking one too. This goes directly to symbolize people's mouth. And it is open for the thought of comments about people and the negativity. The more comes out the more people lose their identities to be seen and become just like others. That is also why I chose to let it sit on top of the faces and connect the way it did.
-Artist Inspired & Categorization
The artist that inspired this work was Wagenchi Mutu. After videos and discussions her work was interesting and really made me stop and think like woahhh what is she doing here. I would categorized this image as a collage.
-Convey to the audience?
Through this image what I was trying to convey is this alienation we have between ourselves trying to be just like others. Using quote #30 from Guy Debord's The Spectator it explained the separation and contemplation one has with oneself about what it is to be living. When looking at my image I want viewers to look at every element in order to feel some type of separation society and myself experience.
-Differences
Between this and my midterm a lot has changed. This is now a digital collage meanwhile my midterm was a poster done with crafts and less meaning. Also the midterm was about me and what describes me as a person.

Quote:

#30
The alienation of the spectator, which reinforces the contemplated objects that result from his own unconscious activity, works like this: the more he contemplates, the less he lives; the more he identifies with the dominant images of need, the less he understands his own life and his own desires. The spectacle’s estrangement from the acting subject is expressed by the fact that the individual’s gestures are no longer his own; they are the gestures of someone else who represents them to him. The spectator does not feel at home anywhere, because the spectacle is everywhere.

Final Exam: The Modern Day Art

• What is the subject of your image? What is the content of your image?
-  The Subject of my Image is Street Art 3D and this is a concept I had seen on Facebook and it was quite Intriguing. These images include various different types of environment. For example, the last image all the way at the bottom is called "Dies Irae" and it is a representation of Ancient Roman History.

• Why did you make the choices that led to the composition?
-  The reasons I choose this composition, are because 1, it was art I have never seen before, 2, it looks quite surreal, 3, it was a project to look forward to, and finally because I feel that it is a creative way to implant art in one of its best forms.

• Explain the process and steps you went through and why you made those decisions.
- The computer software I used were Photoshop, and the regular photo editor (Preview) on Mac OS Sierra and it was quite complex to use on Photoshop in comparison to the regular photo editor (Preview). The reason I believe using these softwares is the best idea is because theres no way I had access to these picture locations otherwise I would have actually taken the picture there.

• How you would categorize your work (ex. collage, graphic print, mixed media, etc).
- This work of mine would fall under Graphic Media Arts because it is basically an image created through digital means.

• What artists or works are appropriate to compare your work to?
- The first Image on the Top, "A Cave In London" is by artist "Edgar Mueller" and it is stated that "Edgar Müller was born in Mülheim/Ruhr on 10 July 1968, and grew up in the rural city of Straelen on the western edge of Germany. His fascination with painting began in his childhood, with paintings of rural scenes of Straelen. Around the age of 25, Müller decided to devote himself completely to street painting. He traveled all over Europe, making a living with his transitory art" (Tom, 2011).

-Second Image, "Waterfall" is also by artist "Edgar Mueller".

-Third Image, "Ice Age" is also by artist "Edgar Mueller"

- Fourth Image, "Dies Irae" by artist "Kurt Wenner" and it is stated that "Kurt Wenner was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and boasts to be the inventor of three-dimensional pastel drawings. He produced his first commissioned mural at the age of sixteen, and by seventeen was earning his living as a graphic artist. He attended both Rhode Island School of Design and Art Center College of Design. According to his website, 3D Pavement Artists, 3D Sidewalk Artists, and 3D Chalk artists can all trace the roots of their work back to the street art of Rome in 1982, where Kurt Wenner transformed the complex geometry of Classical Italian Architecture into a new form of Popular Art. Whether they are called Street Paintings, Chalk Paintings, Sidewalk Paintings or pavement art, if they have a three-dimensional illusion they can be traced back to Kurt Wenner pastel drawings" (Tom, 2011).

• What quote from Society of the Spectacle best illustrates the themes in your self portrait? Please explain this.
- The quote I choose from Society of the Spectacle article that best illustrates my theme in my self portrait is number 9, "In a world that has really been turned upside down, the true is a moment of the false".
• What do you think this image conveys to the audience?
- The reaction I would hope to get is that the audience believes that what is being shown is an image that can be manipulated and represented in a subjective manner and that just because an image is shown does not mean it is true and it lives up to what it is representing.

• What are the differences between the midterm self-portrait and your final self-portrait?
- In the midterm self portrait I used an image to represent me in various forms like wave colliding with a snow mountain and this image reveals something entirely different because I am in the images but my representation is unique and tells a message.

• What influenced these changes (events, readings, information, artists)?
- Well, I wanted to see how creative I can get and looking at street art in 3D is truly an amazing sight to see and I wanted to implement this in my own project.

Final Project: The Colorful Me

For this final project I decided to work on a selfie inspired by Andy Warhol. For my last project I did a cut and paste style project where I cut a silhouette of myself, inspired by Nancy Spero and painted red paint on myself to represent blood. By this I meant to say that although women get their periods it is not something that makes them inferior, it makes them stronger.

In contrast, this project is to represent me and my colorful personality as well as my best friend who makes up a big part of who I am. I consider myself to be a very happy and positive person and I feel colors are the best way to describe this. Bright colors typically represent happy times like for example a rainbow is known for its bright colors and represents happiness and brightness after a rainy storm. My best friend really makes me laugh and she and I share many happy times together.

In my original photograph, my best friend and I are matching with tie dye hoodies. Although we sometimes do try to match our outfits, we were wearing the same thing for twin day at our school. We coordinated ourselves to match perfectly and this is my favorite picture of us.

For this project I adapted Warhol's bottled line technique and traced and copied an image of my best friend and I four times onto a different piece of paper. To trace I used an ink art pen and used the projector screen in class to copy my original photograph. After each of the papers were fully dry I colored them in with crayon and made them colorful to represent myself.

Andy Warhol is "one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s." His art has inspired many and will continue to inspire the world for many generations to come. Warhol mastered the blotted line technique and this along with his colorful designs became his very successful signature. By this technique he could easily copy an image and paste it onto again like a printing or copy machine. This saved him a lot of time on his artwork and through this no piece of art would be the same.

The quote, "The spectacle is not a collection of images; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images (line 4)," from The Society of the Spectacle written by Guy Debord relates to my art. I like this quote because in images there is a social relation between people just as in real life. Humans are social animals and relationships are a necessity as we need them to function. Just as in the quote, in my photograph you don't just see two people separately hugging, you notice them together and group them together as one.

Spectrum

What is the subject of your image?
The title of this series is called "Spectrum", each of these selfies are their own pieces that can be seen individually. Each of the colors represents an emotion, and like the color wheel where there are primary colors (Red, Blue, Yellow) and secondary colors (Purple, Green Orange), there are the “primary” and “secondary” emotions.
Color Meanings:
Red: "R is for Passion"
This selfie is supposed to represent passion and just a drive to want something or to do something. It is messy dominant, and acts on what it wants.
Yellow: "Y is for Anxie-Tea"
Whenever I am stressed out or anxious i tend to drink tea and lots of it. It's more of a safety feature that I do to calm myself down.
Blue: "B is for Tired"
This emotion is just being tired, whether it is physically or mentally, or emotionally about something.
Green: "G is for Sick"
This could either be taken literally, so physically being sick or being fed up about a situation. (think of the phrase "I'm sick or this")
Orange: "O is for Imploding"
This is to represent the feeling of holding back. There’s a lot of energy, however it cannot be expressed.
Purple: “P is for Longing”
It’s somewhat similar to red, however instead of being active on the want, you are being inactive. You want things, you long for something however you do nothing about it.

What is the content of your image?
My project is a series of small selfies that each convey an emotion. I drew each one based off of selfies that I have either taken for this class, put on my social media, or as painting references for later. Each one is its own piece with its own title and each color represents a different emotion.  The Secondary emotions are combinations of the Primary ones. So just how Red and Yellow make Orange, the Imploding emotion is a combination of the Passion and Anxiety emotions.

Why did you make the choices that led to the composition?
I chose the small size and having them be six separate drawings because I wanted them to feel a little more like the selfies that we have. The selfies that we take are small, personal, and can fit in the palm of our hand because they are on our phones. Even though I did not want to go digital for this piece I did want to include the small and personal aspect of them. I also like that you can flip through and they can still stand alone as drawings (or selfies) or you can put them together like how you view your pictures on your phone. I also like how they almost feel like playing cards, you can put them on the table in whichever order that you want and they still mean something.

Explain the process and steps you went through and why you made those decisions.
I wanted the colors of each selfie and the eyes to be the main focus of each of the drawings. So I kept all of the color palettes simple for each of them, black, white, grey, and the color they were showing. The hypno eyes were to draw the focus in and bring drama to each of the selfies. I also thought about old nude paintings and how they will look at the viewer. I wanted this to be in my work to be kind of like a staring contest. I saw it in one of the filters on my snap chat and thought they would look good for them. I cut my watercolor paper into 4in x 6in rectangles and started to draw on them. after that I used my ink to draw the lines and make the greys, then I used watercolor. I wanted to work with a limited palette rather than a bigger spectrum because I like the challenge it brings. I feel it helps me narrow my focus on what I want the artwork to say rather than how pretty it is going to look. The challenge was really associating the colors with the feelings they represent. It is easier to assign a color like red to the emotion "Passion" because they are already related. A color like yellow has another meaning other than joy which is actually fear. So it's like the drawing has to work harder to relate to the emotion.
How would you categorize your work?
I would categorize them as ink and watercolor paintings. They are mini self portraits.

What artists or works are appropriate to compare your work to?
While making these self portraits I was thinking about the comic Sin City and how the artist, Frank Miller, carefully chose where to put color. The entire comic is in black and white, except certain objects or people in the panels that are colored in. The idea is to bring attention to these things and set the mood of the story. While I really did not care for its story, the way the artist told it was interesting so I wanted to use that for these selfies, except with a bit more color. I also thought about old nude paintings and how they will look at the viewer. I wanted this to be in my work to be kind of like a staring contest.

What do you think this image conveys to the audience?
I wanted to show subtle moods that are somewhat relatable to everybody. I feel that when the viewer looks at these emotions they can say that they’ve felt them at some point of another. The eye contact is to establish a relationship with the audience.
What are the differences between the midterm self-portrait and your final self-portrait?
Throughout the semester I have been experimenting with new materials, one of which was clay. So in my midterm I wanted to use that and make the piece more sculptural. I wanted to play with a clay figure and fake flowers and any technique I could think of using, I used it. However, I typically work with ink and watercolor, so for this assignment I wanted to use something that I knew well. The midterm was about approaching raw emotions and feelings that don't quite have a name. The final continue to talk about emotions, something other than feeling happy, sad, or angry. I wanted to approach emotions that aren't easy to pinpoint but you know them well enough. They are the ones with no names and are a little more complicated than joy or anger in a 2-D format. I wanted these emotions to have an actual figure rather than an abstract image left to interpretation. So, there is a more concrete message in this work than the last one.

What influenced these changes (events, readings, information, artists)?
Like I mentioned before, I typically work in watercolor and ink. The reason i picked these mediums is because they are really my favorite and I haven't really gotten to work with them all semester. So I used this project as a chance to get back into using them. There was something about doing a sculpture that had a "in your face" feeling. I wanted something more subtle so I did facial expressions to show that subtlety. Whether it was in the eyebrows, the mouths or even the placement of the hands, I wanted there to be this quiet message, but always staring at the viewer. John Berger wrote how no matter what women are feeling, they are always being watched. Even at the moment of their fathers funeral they are still being watched. He explained how in nude paintings the women are always staring at the viewer to establish that their relationship is with the one who owned the painting. I wanted to have the eyes looking at the viewer to establish a relationship, but not one of lust, more of acknowledgement that they are being watched and it becoming a staring contest

The Hiding me

The subject of my final project image is that there are always two sides of somebody’s life. The one you portray to everybody and the one you only know about “the hiding you”.  It’s a picture of me smiling , but on the life side is the person I don’t want anybody to know. The right side is the person everybody see me as. I decided to use this as my final project because of the quote I choose from the article, “what appears is good; what is good appears”. To me that quote meant that even though it appears it might not always be good or what you think it is. It’s just like you might know a person’s name but you don’t know their story, or don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I would say my project is a self image and collage. An artist I would compare my image to is Cindy Sherman because it’s like i’m pretending to be somebody else or I can say dressing up as somebody i’m not. For my midterm I did a collage too but this time I did my whole collage on snap chat. I made a lot of different snaps and use the snap chat cutting tool to cut out the words , the eye, and the hand.  The eye I used was an eye with tears falling. The hand is there for two reasons. One of the reasons is to cover up half of the smile and the second reason is to look as if I’m wiping my tears. The words are there to describe the type of person you see. At first I was going to do it on a poster but I changed my mind because I did that for my midterm. I decided to use snap chat it was different. At first I couldn’t think of how I could do it but then I remember about all the tools snap chat had and I use them for my final image. My image conveys to the audience that you might think you know somebody but most of the time you don’t.

My Final Project: Ana Mendieta Process

David Sroka                                                                                                        December 6th, 2017
Self Image
Professor Cacoilo

Ana Mendieta Process

Over the semester, after learning about Ana Mendieta’s work, her name has stuck into my brain and I cannot seem to get it out.  I want to try to save the world, and while thinking about that thought, Ana Mendieta pops up again in my mind.  The connection I make is that Ana Mendieta was against violence, and to promote that, she made numerous self-portraits of her beaten up.  I believe she thought that was all she could do to stop violence.  I believe it is a really sad thing that she died because she would have such a huge influence over today’s problems.

So I figure I make these 2 photos to tribute to her.  The subject of these images is basically a tribute to Ana Mendieta as she took photos similar to these to promote that violence is bad.  I Photoshopped these two self portraits to make it seem like I just got beat up and I am feeling blue.  In the image on the left, I look like I got beat up with some serious bruises.  Ana Mendieta used serious bruises to take self portraits against violence.  I think it looks a little scary.  On the right I put a shade to give a depressed look and added the teardrop, moon and sun.  I think it gives off a depressed look and it may give a weird or mixed feeling.  I want this feeling to be known as the stop violence feeling, because it ends up horrible and in a disgusting, bloody mess.

I categorize my work as mixed media as it is a regular photo mixed with photoshop effects.  You can compare my work to all artists against violence.  The difference between my midterm and this is that my midterm was more about a how a person may feel about their look.  This is about Ana Mendieta.  What influenced the change between my midterm and final is me wanting to do something more direct, and Ana Mendieta was my choice.

Final Project : Three Head Dog

What is the subject of your image?
The subject of my image was a represent of three head demon dog. The three head dog is protect of
What is the content of your image?
The content of the image is to represent myself as the three-head dog. I feel like three heads represent the 3 places I was raised at. Also my personality raised by three people who influence my life grown up.
Why did you make the choices that led to the composition?
Three Face- I used three face of me because represent my best thing about my personality my kinds towards others, my hard worker, and my attitude.
Dog mouth & teeth-  The dog month and teeth represents protection. Dogs use their month to protect themselves and to save others by dragging them to safety. Also they used their mouth to get attention and eat some good food to.
Fur- The fur represents the use for warmth and trading goods. When wearing fur jacket is show in the Midwest your hard work to wealth.
Nails- The nails represent the beauty in the beast and the protection of themselves.
Gold gun- The gold gun represent the wealth of gold and working had to get gold and the gun represent protection of your wealth.

Explain the process and steps you went through and why you made those decisions.
I didn’t went through a lot step process because I based off my second to last homework assignment. The only process I had to went through was finding a quote to match with my project.

How you would categorize your work (ex. collage, graphic print, mixed media, etc).
I will categorize my work as a mixed, printed graphic that have a texture of real objects in my project

What artists or works are appropriate to compare your work to?
Wangechi Mutu was the artist work I appropriate to compare to my project. Her art work was very interesting seeing mixed around the bodies , face, and animal parts. I learn about her during class when we watch the  video about Mutu she had created a violent beast that was eating humans. For my final project, I compare some myself towards a mixture things that represent me.

What do you think this image conveys to the audience?
The image conveys to the audience a bad ass three head dog boy with a nice fur coat and with a powerful weapon.
What are the differences between the midterm self-portrait and your final self-portrait?
The differences between my midterm and final self portrait. My midterm self portrait was draw out and took more time on doing it. Also my midterm connect towards more background of myself and who I am. My final portrait was more digital images, and represent more inside of me.
What influenced these changes (events, readings, information, artists)?
The influenced that change me was learn things about how to edit a picture, and learn about a new artist who art is very interesting towards that connect to me.

What quote from Society of the Spectacle best illustrates the themes in your self-portrait
46.
Exchange value could arise only as an agent of use value, but its victory by means of its own weapons created the conditions for its autonomous domination. Mobilizing all human use and establishing a monopoly over its satisfaction, exchange value has ended up by directing use. The process of exchange became identified with all possible use and reduced use to the mercy of exchange. Exchange value is the condottiere of use value who ends up waging the war for himself.
This quote represents the exchange value of the gold, weapons, and fur. With the gold and fur it helps developed our economy.  With valuable things always ending up with war like fighting over oil in other countries. That’s why the three head dog represent the protection the people who will fight for value to build their economy.

The Alienation

  • What is the subject of your image?
    • The subject of my image is the alienation and absorption that this era has come to due to social media. Throughout this course and mostly towards the end we continued to speak about how we have become affected by the expectations of society and the loss of our identities.
  • What is the content of your image?
    • The content of my image is myself surrounded by random faces with an odd looking connector to an open mouth sitting on top of the faces. While the top of the picture contains a moon with a small shadow on the edge to the right and centered. While the background shows waves in a ripple effect.
  • Choices for the composition:
    • Moon- The idea and choice to have it in the image was the connection and meaning I personally put behind it. The moon to me shows that not even darkness can hide beauty. This does include the environment but regarding people as well and the evilness in personalities.
    • Water- The water and ripple effect symbolizes the waves of opinions and words from people’s mouth. I did this in order to give more meaning and somewhat of a hint of why I had random faces
    • Faces- This was meant to portray society and the movement that continues to grow with lost identities. That is also why they are all the same color and have their eyes closed.
    • Me- I am in the picture because unfortunately the era of media has affected me as well. I don't think that I have lost myself but I am definitely affected by the opinions of others and am influenced by what is the “new”.
    • The connector- One of the important part of the image because it demonstrates the absorption. It connects me and goes over these faces connecting to the mouth.
    • Mouth- This piece is another important one. This goes direct to the point of everything being talked and what can be poisonous. The more comes out of the mouth the more identity is lost. We let others alienate us from what really should matter because of comments and hatred and what needs to be/not be posted.
  • Artist inspired work & categorization?
    • The artist that inspired my work was definitely Wangechi Mutu. After the videos watched and discussing her work, it was all about that awkward and weird image or video that really made you think about what the image really was.
    • This was meant to be a collage image with all of the elements being added.
  • Convey to the audience?
    • Using the quote of Guy Debord’s assignment it continued to mention the separation and contemplation one has with oneself about living. And how the individual is just now a representation of everything else. When looking at my image I want viewers to focus on that big picture and notice the elements being used go together to this quote. I put myself with these other individuals and shows this bright red mouth of what people use to poison and speak about others and what we let others tell us what is expected.
  • Differences
    • Between this and my midterm I see change in my technique skills and more meaning behind each little thing that I used and edited. Also my first project was more surrounded around crafts and more of just myself and my struggles with also what things describe me. Now with this project I wanted to challenge myself and use the new inspirations in order to create me image.

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

The subject of my final image is split personality.  I wanted to make this final project for light skin African Americans that go through situations with people questioning their race. This project is meant to show people the struggle in depth what individuals in this situation goes through along with the questions they are constantly asked. The content of my image is three split personalities. The three represent myself. Me being "to black" when I hang out with my white friends, me not fitting in with my black friends, and me not sure on where I actually fit in. I made the choices I did simply because I plan on sharing this with the world and letting people know that if they are going through this that they aren't alone. It is hard not looking like everyone's standard of what they think you are supposed to look like based on your race. These pictures are me conforming to what different social groups expect me to look like. Me flat ironing my hair represents my white friends having a fetish with my hair.  Me having my hair wrapped and my tattoos exposed is the boho chic look I would like to have, but my black friends telling me I can't pull it off. I would categorize my work as self portrait photography. I used a self-timer on my phone to take the pictures, with a black backdrop to create the best picture possible. I would like to compare my work to Cindy Sherman, and Daryna Barykina. Cindy Sherman inspire me in the sense of dressing up as in this case someone else (being the different versions of me) for my self-portraits. I used Daryna Barykina's work as an inspiration for my pictures. Instead of showing ways people deal with the situation they are stuck in, I decided to show a struggle I go through myself and how I might question myself. A quote I chose from "A Society of the Spectacle" was "The images detached from every aspect of life merge into a common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered. Fragmented views of reality regroup themselves into a new unity as a separate pseudo-world that can only be looked at. The specialization of images of the world has culminated in a world of autonomized images where even the deceivers are deceived. The spectacle is a concrete inversion of life, an autonomous movement of the nonliving."  I feel like this relates to my post in the sense of the quote mentioning images that are detached from every aspect of life merge into common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered.  People can take their views of me and how I look in many different ways, but people picking and choosing how they want me to look tears me apart. I think this image should overall tell someone that they should just dress and act how they feel they should. Do what makes you comfortable. There is a big difference between this and my midterm project. I have learned more about myself and how I want to express myself though art, and I also took more time to get this project done, and put more effort into it. I was honestly afraid to be open with myself when doing my work for this class, but Spike Lee's remake of "She's Gotta Have It" influenced me to express myself more. The show was more about the main character finding herself not only in life but through her art, and it helped me start to figure out who I want to be.
