Final Project: The Colorful Me

For this final project I decided to work on a selfie inspired by Andy Warhol. For my last project I did a cut and paste style project where I cut a silhouette of myself, inspired by Nancy Spero and painted red paint on myself to represent blood. By this I meant to say that although women get their periods it is not something that makes them inferior, it makes them stronger.

In contrast, this project is to represent me and my colorful personality as well as my best friend who makes up a big part of who I am. I consider myself to be a very happy and positive person and I feel colors are the best way to describe this. Bright colors typically represent happy times like for example a rainbow is known for its bright colors and represents happiness and brightness after a rainy storm. My best friend really makes me laugh and she and I share many happy times together.

In my original photograph, my best friend and I are matching with tie dye hoodies. Although we sometimes do try to match our outfits, we were wearing the same thing for twin day at our school. We coordinated ourselves to match perfectly and this is my favorite picture of us.

For this project I adapted Warhol's bottled line technique and traced and copied an image of my best friend and I four times onto a different piece of paper. To trace I used an ink art pen and used the projector screen in class to copy my original photograph. After each of the papers were fully dry I colored them in with crayon and made them colorful to represent myself.

Andy Warhol is "one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s." His art has inspired many and will continue to inspire the world for many generations to come. Warhol mastered the blotted line technique and this along with his colorful designs became his very successful signature. By this technique he could easily copy an image and paste it onto again like a printing or copy machine. This saved him a lot of time on his artwork and through this no piece of art would be the same.

The quote, "The spectacle is not a collection of images; it is a social relation between people that is mediated by images (line 4)," from The Society of the Spectacle written by Guy Debord relates to my art. I like this quote because in images there is a social relation between people just as in real life. Humans are social animals and relationships are a necessity as we need them to function. Just as in the quote, in my photograph you don't just see two people separately hugging, you notice them together and group them together as one.
