Gallery Visit Assignment (Due Wednesday 11/15)

(PUBLISHED ON DEC 21)

What are some themes of the exhibition?
- The location I went to for this Gallery Visit is called "Mana Contemporary" and it is located in Jersey City, NJ. There were several types of themes in this Gallery, for example there were abstract sculptures, self portraits, live image/video, modern art, greek mythology, and some Mona Lisa remakes.

How do the artists address identity and the self?
- There was art work of an artist there named, John Chamberlain, who was born on April 16, 1927 in Rochester, Indiana and he was a sculptor and he also had work in self portraits, in fact some say that selfies basically started from him, because back in the 1900's "Selfies" were not as famous as they are now. In addition, his self portraits includes, selfies that are distorted, selfies that has the individual in the mirror, and many other selfies that are in different positions. His work is quite impressive because he basically paved the way for individuals who create selfies today. John Chamberlain addresses Identity and the self through his images in a very simple and not so difficult way because he traveled a lot and in his travels he took some pictures that were part of his Journey.

What are some critiques of self, identity and perception?
- When it comes to understanding self, identity and perception, one must have an open mind and an individual who thinks outside the box in some cases. For example, John Chamberlains work is both creative and simple because of his self portraits. Artists like Andy Warhol are also individuals who show there work in a creative way, for example a series of self portraits in different color and forms, almost like a pattern. Self, Identity and perception comes from a profound origin and requires serious investment of time.

What are the artists and curators telling the gallery or museum audience? How do the artists approach the presentation of self and self portraiture?
- The art work shown in this gallery were impressive and phenomenal because there were actual live image/videos, paintings, abstract sculptures, and usages of political figures. The Curator was very detailed in her description of the artwork. The Artwork shows the propaganda that occurred during President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Union. Some of the artwork included Greek Mythology, showing Poseidon's trident in the image. There was this physical piece of artwork that was made of microfiber glass and it was stretched out and I believe it was a undergrad student who made it and it was marvelous because it caught the attention of the audience I was with.
