The subject of my final image is split personality. I wanted to make this final project for light skin African Americans that go through situations with people questioning their race. This project is meant to show people the struggle in depth what individuals in this situation goes through along with the questions they are constantly asked. The content of my image is three split personalities. The three represent myself. Me being "to black" when I hang out with my white friends, me not fitting in with my black friends, and me not sure on where I actually fit in. I made the choices I did simply because I plan on sharing this with the world and letting people know that if they are going through this that they aren't alone. It is hard not looking like everyone's standard of what they think you are supposed to look like based on your race. These pictures are me conforming to what different social groups expect me to look like. Me flat ironing my hair represents my white friends having a fetish with my hair. Me having my hair wrapped and my tattoos exposed is the boho chic look I would like to have, but my black friends telling me I can't pull it off. I would categorize my work as self portrait photography. I used a self-timer on my phone to take the pictures, with a black backdrop to create the best picture possible. I would like to compare my work to Cindy Sherman, and Daryna Barykina. Cindy Sherman inspire me in the sense of dressing up as in this case someone else (being the different versions of me) for my self-portraits. I used Daryna Barykina's work as an inspiration for my pictures. Instead of showing ways people deal with the situation they are stuck in, I decided to show a struggle I go through myself and how I might question myself. A quote I chose from "A Society of the Spectacle" was "The images detached from every aspect of life merge into a common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered. Fragmented views of reality regroup themselves into a new unity as a separate pseudo-world that can only be looked at. The specialization of images of the world has culminated in a world of autonomized images where even the deceivers are deceived. The spectacle is a concrete inversion of life, an autonomous movement of the nonliving." I feel like this relates to my post in the sense of the quote mentioning images that are detached from every aspect of life merge into common stream in which the unity of that life can no longer be recovered. People can take their views of me and how I look in many different ways, but people picking and choosing how they want me to look tears me apart. I think this image should overall tell someone that they should just dress and act how they feel they should. Do what makes you comfortable. There is a big difference between this and my midterm project. I have learned more about myself and how I want to express myself though art, and I also took more time to get this project done, and put more effort into it. I was honestly afraid to be open with myself when doing my work for this class, but Spike Lee's remake of "She's Gotta Have It" influenced me to express myself more. The show was more about the main character finding herself not only in life but through her art, and it helped me start to figure out who I want to be.
